San Jiao functions in Traditional Chinese Medicine

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the San Jiao (also known as the Triple Burner or Triple Heater) is an important concept that refers to a functional system in the body. Unlike Western anatomy, the San Jiao is not a specific physical organ, but rather a collection of functions that involve the coordination of the body’s fluids and energy.

The San Jiao is divided into three parts or “burners”:

  1. Upper Burner: This includes the chest, lungs, and heart. Its function is to transform qi (vital energy) and breathe in pure qi from the environment.
  2. Middle Burner: This includes the stomach, spleen, and pancreas. Its function is to transform food and drink into nutrients and distribute them throughout the body.
  3. Lower Burner: This includes the liver, kidneys, and bladder. Its function is to store and excrete waste products from the body.

The San Jiao is responsible for maintaining the balance and communication between the body’s organs and systems. It regulates the flow of qi and fluids throughout the body, ensuring that they are distributed evenly and efficiently.

When the San Jiao is functioning properly, the body is in a state of balance and harmony. However, imbalances in the San Jiao can lead to a variety of health problems, including digestive disorders, fluid imbalances, and hormonal imbalances.

TCM practitioners use various techniques to balance and support the San Jiao, including acupuncture, herbal medicine, dietary therapy, and qigong exercises. By promoting the healthy functioning of the San Jiao, TCM aims to support overall health and well-being.
