Respiratory Syncytial Virus

RSV stands for Respiratory Syncytial Virus. It is a highly contagious virus that infects the respiratory tract and is a leading cause of lower respiratory tract infections in infants and young children. The symptoms of RSV can be mild, such as a runny nose and cough, but it can also be more severe, particularly in infants and older adults, leading to bronchiolitis and pneumonia.

There is currently no specific cure for RSV, but treatment typically focuses on relieving symptoms, such as providing extra fluid, keeping the air moist, and, in severe cases, providing oxygen. In some cases, antiviral medications may be prescribed. Preventing the spread of the virus is important, and this can be done by frequent hand washing, avoiding close contact with infected individuals, and cleaning surfaces that may have come into contact with the virus.

It’s important to seek medical attention if your child is showing signs of severe illness, such as rapid breathing, wheezing, severe coughing, or a high fever, especially if they are under 6 months of age
